Day 2 (Monday): Antananarivo – Andasibe

Antananarivo, often abbreviated to Tana, has a distinctively French flavour and atmosphere: French is widely spoken and road, as well as shop signs (such as boulangerie or épicerie), are mostly in French.

Drive from Tana to Andasibe through the green landscape typical of the eastern part of the island. On the road we will stop in Marozevo to visit Pereyras. This park/center provides an excellent opportunity to see and photograph some of the island’s most extraordinary reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates including a wide range of Chameleon species.

Tonight we take a night walk to look for nocturnal animals in their natural habitat (a headlamp is useful)

Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 3 (Tuesday): Special Reserve of Analamazaotra

This morning we visit the Special Reserve of Analamazaotra. This rainforest reserve is the place to see, amongst others, the Indri-Indri, the biggest of the lemurs in Madagascar reaching up to 1 meter in size. It lives in small family groups communicating with others with loud ghostly howls. There are several legends which try to explain its origins since it is considered a sacred animal across the whole of Madagascar.

The reserve is only 810ha in size with a very unique and beautiful fauna and flora. There is a high likelihood that we will see a wide variety of orchids, canopy inhabitants, which include Chameleons, Tenrecs and a range of bird species

The afternoon is free to spend at leisure.

Included Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 (Wednesday): Andasibe – Fort Dauphin – Berenty

After an early breakfast we drive back to Antananarivo to catch our flight to Fort Dauphin.

From the airport we transfer to Berenty, a private Reserve, which lies about 80km from Fort Dauphin. We drive through the humid forests of the east where the landscape is dotted with square rice fields, green and luxuriant vegetation, waving palms forests and shady mango trees.

We drive past the towering Anosy Mountain chain to arrive in the so-called “transition zone”. This area is dominated by the Triangle Palm, a palm endemic to the Fort Dauphin area. From here the landscape changes again, but this time into a drier habitat. We have our first glimpses of the Spiny Forest, with sisal plantations etched into the foreground.

Tonight we take a night walk to explore the nightlife of mammals, amphibians and reptiles in the Reserve.

Included Meals:  Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5 (Thursday): Berenty Reserve

In 1936, the Heaulme family decided to establish this small (260ha) reserve, a gallery forest of century-old tamarind trees bordering the River Mandrare, to protect the large variety of animals found there, as well as the “spiny thicket” characteristic of southern Madagascar in an area adjacent to the reserve.

Berenty, is known as the Kingdom of the Lemurs and here we will see the well-documented Ring-tailed Lemur, known as Maki and the Dancing Lemur, known as Sifaka as well as other species such as the Brown Lemurs, the nocturnal Lemurs and Mouse Lemurs, a photographer’s feast day.
