Canoeing Down The Tsiribihina

5 Days | March to November

Antananarivo - Antsirabe - Miandrivazo - Tsaraotana - Morondava

This five day tour combines a canoe trip down the Tsiribihina River using a traditional wooden boat made from timber endemic to the region. Our journey will take about three days and we will spend around six to seven hours a day on the river.

You will get the opportunity to explore the Sakalava countryside from a different perspective and at night we will sleep on the river shores, sharing the campsites with turtles and crocodiles!
We then drive back to Morondava passing through the Avenue des Baobabs where we find these giant trees clustering together.

Day 1: Antananarivo – Antsirabe
175 kms distance, 3 and a half hours drive

Meet and greet your Tour Manager at the airport or in your hotel.

Antananarivo, often abbreviated to Tana, has a distinctively French flavour and atmosphere: French is widely spoken and road, as well as shop signs (such as boulangerie or épicerie), are mostly in French. After a short walking tour of the town we will drive to Antsirabe. Today we drive from Antananarivo to Antsirabe through beautiful scenery. On the road we will see handicraft markets and get a flavour of the daily life of the Merina ethnic people. We will stop in Ambatolampy to visit a small traditional factory making pots in aluminium.

Included Meals: None

Day 2: Antsirabe – Miandrivazo
220 kms distance, 4 hours drive

Antsirabe is an elegant city and is the centre of Madagascar’s beer industry – smell the brewing at Star Brewery as we enter the town! Antsirabe, literally “the place of salt’ was founded by the Norwegians in 1856 although the architecture of many of the buildings and wide avenues bears testimony to Madagascar’s French colonial past. This area has a temperate climate and all fruits and vegetables that grow in a cool climate are to be found here.

After a short walking tour of the town we will drive to Miandrivazo.

Included Meals: None

Day 3 to 4: River tour
Approx. 160km on the river

After an early breakfast we drive about two hours to reach Masiakampy which is our starting point and begin our river tour using a traditional wooden boat made from timber endemic to the region.

Our journey will take about 3 days and we will spend around 6 to 7 hours a day on the river.

The next day we will explore the ‘Gorge de Bemaraha’ before stopping at Anosin Ampela, a wonderful waterfall where we can refresh ourselves.

This river tour, through sometimes dense vegetation, gives you the opportunity to explore the Sakalava countryside from a different perspective and at night we will sleep on the river shores, sharing the campsites with turtles and crocodiles!

We will also hope to see many different species of birds, such as bee-eater, egret, heron, coucal, flycatcher and pied crows as well as fruit bats and, of course, our famous lemurs.

Two nights in the camping sites

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Tsaraotana – Morondava
Approx. 120km

Today is our last day on the river. In the afternoon we will arrive in the port of Tsaraotana from where we drive north, by 4 x 4, to reach Morondava.

On the road we will see giant and sacred baobabs, the intertwined baobabs ‘in love’ as well as the womanlike and manlike baobab. We will also pass the baobab avenue where we will try to catch sunset in-between these giant trees clustered together along both sides of the road. End of services.

Included Meals: Breakfast
